Maker Faire Coming to Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids, MI: Maker Faire is coming to Grand Rapids! The first annual Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire is scheduled for August 30 & 31, at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Maker Faire combines the traditional science fair with innovation and engineering capitalizing on the Maker movement for something entirely new.

The Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire is being organized by the GR Makers, The Geek Group, Grand Rapids Community College, Genesis Inc. and the Grand Rapids Public Museum.

“What an exciting event to bring to Grand Rapids,” said Kate Moore, VP of Marketing and PR for the Grand Rapids Public Museum. “As a community institution, we are pleased to be one of the planning partners and venue for the inaugural Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire. This event will truly capture the maker spirit of West Michigan.”

The Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire takes after its enormous flagship event, Maker Faire Bay Area, which hosts more than 130,000 visitors in San Mateo, California in May. The Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire will be a smaller, community-focused event, but will follow the Maker Faire model of celebrating do-it-yourself creativity and tinkering.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Featuring both established and emerging local “makers,” the Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly celebration featuring rockets and robots, DIY science and technology, urban farming and sustainability, alternative energy, bicycles, unique hand-made crafts, local food, and educational installations.  Visitors will see installations from the GR Makers, the Geek Group, GRCC and other local West Michigan inventors, innovators, and tinkerers.

“The GR Makers have just returned from the largest Maker Faire the San Francisco Bay Area, and we are excited to be a part of this collaboration bringing Maker Faire to Grand Rapids,” said Casey DuBois of GR Makers.

“The Geek Group is proud to be a partner in the first Grand Rapids Mini Maker Faire” said Josh Spencer, Director of Development for the Geek Group.  “This will be a great opportunity to highlight the creative talent that exists in this region and the innovative ideas that are being executed by members of the Geek Group.”

The call for makers is now open through August 1. Any groups or individuals interested in participating in this inaugural event should complete the application at Makers and creators will be listed and featured on after the Call for Makers closes on August 1.

Maker Faire began in 2006 in San Mateo, CA by the people behind MAKE magazine. Maker Faire has appeared in Austin, Detroit, and New York City. Mini Maker Faires have started to sprout up around the United States, including events in Ann Arbor, Sebastopol, Aspen, Kansas City, and Boston, and in major international cities such as Tokyo and Paris.
